16 dark skies
The quality of the night sky arching above the Beacons
has been recognised internationally. This is one of the
best places in the world to stargaze.
The Brecon Beacons National Park has proudly held
International Dark Sky Reserve status since 2013 and we
are one of only 18 reserves in the world. This means that
we possess a distinguished quality of starry nights and
nocturnal environment that is protected for its scientific,
natural, educational and cultural properties.
Preserving these beautiful dark skies is incredibly
important to us because the inappropriate and excessive
use of artificial light, also known as light pollution, is not
only impairing our view of the universe but it’s also having
a huge impact on humans, wildlife and our climate.
Immerse yourself in all things Dark Skies at the
Brecon Beacons National Park Dark Skies Festival on
the 20th of September. Booking will be available online
when tickets are released.
We’ve put together five useful tips on how you can
reduce your own light pollution and help safeguard
the night’s sky, and our planet, for years to come.
