What of “ideal” do I see in me?
Trait 1: One who connects to children as human beings;
Trait 2: One who is a role model subscribing to a pedagogy of care;
Trait 3: One who is critically conscious, socially just and inclusive of all children; and
Trait 13: One who embraces diversity using the strength of many voices.
I love my children, and everything I do is with them in mind. I consider all aspects of their lives and how it affects teaching and learning in my
classroom. I create what I like to call “Habits of Mind” because my learners need support and consistent reasons and opportunities to
persevere no matter how difficult life is for them. I connect to their lives intimately. At school we are a community….”
The classroom I was given…it was an empty
uninspiring learning space, with no resources. Using our imaginations and recycling everyday
materials, together with my learners I worked on
making re-imagining our classroom
In role modelling agency and creating a
community with this task, we created a space
that we all care about. The fingerprint of each
child is in our classroom.
Children do not only need to be told that they are
loved, they need to see “love” – and the full
experience of love is to want to learn in a space
conducive for learning. This is exactly what we
achieved. True love of learning can only happen
in a place where not only the teacher but also
the walls who speak.
