HOW DO WE RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN A HOLY MANNER?
Pay close attention to the readings during the Liturgy of the Word
If possible, read & meditate on these readings before going to Mass. Let the
sacred Word of God seep deep in you soul. Ask the Holy Spirit to unlock the
meaning for you. Ponder it like the man in Psalm 1 whose “delight is in the law
of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). Then, like
him, our soul will yield good fruit.
2. Necessity of mental prayer every day. Suffice to say that in order to really
experience the life-transforming power of Christ in the Eucharist, daily mental
prayer (Christian mediation) is indispensable and essential.
3. Thanksgiving after Communion. Eucharist, in fact, means ‘thanksgiving’ in
Greek. An for what shall we thank him?
For the gift of Divine Life and adoption as divine daughters
For our own natural life, and all of the love we receive
For the Communion we share with his Blessed Mother and ours, as well as
communion with all of the saints
For healing that is right now taking place in our souls as we are being more
and more conformed to Christ (Romans 8:29)
For strength to resist temptation and to grow in virtue.
For anything and everything else that is good that you can think of.
We needn’t say anything, of course. We can sit & just be with Him; we can
be warmed by His divine rays, the way we do when are in the sun on a warm
day. The plant needs to do nothing in order to receive the nutrients of the
sun. We just need to “Be still and know that He is God” (Psalm 46:10).
4. Eucharist Adoration Nothing increases our Faith more than to come before
the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and adore Him there; to see Him there, and to
know that hears and loves us.
5. Practice the Presence of God Spend time listening to God during the entire
Mass and other times of prayer. This will help you to listen to him when you are
going about the rest of your day. When you begin to recognize how He is speaking
to you though good thoughts and good desires that are welling up within you, this
will give you joy and you will see that he loves you so much and that he wills your
happiness.
6. Look for ways to deny yourself throughout the day so that you can
strengthen your will power and offer God a heart empty of self for him to fill. This
disciplines our inordinate desire for pleasure and comfort (e.g. avoid thinking too
much about yourself; avoid negative thoughts about others; have water instead of a
diet coke, etc.) In this way, we will prepare ourselves be filled with the Sprit of God
when we receive Holy Communion.
