the convocation MSMEs. We have to do technology diffusion in MSMEs.
On the one hand, we talk about technology 4.0 with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Internet of things,
robotics and all that...Artificial Intelligence. We should do, obviously, we should do at the highest levels but what
about rural technology? What about MSMEs? You know they have not even reached the limits of the Second
Industrial Revolution. And it is something we can decide, can be done. I have been asking all the universities,
national labs to take a proximate MSMEs and infuse technology in them. It doesn’t affect your work at all. In fact,
many how, this can become student projects. You take up projects because you need to solve. And, he also
gets a feeling for what is important for the country. Of course, you must be there in the highest reaches, not that
you shouldn’t do Artificial Intelligence that is a very fashionable buzzword today. But it is also very important –
Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics. I am sure your university is conscious of this. When
we talk about Artificial Intelligence, we talk about intelligence displayed by systems of a type which we normally
associate with human beings. Systems like computers, cybernetic machines showing intelligence like we have
got. And you can do it by cognition or you can do it by artificial neural networks. That’s where deep learning
comes in. Somebody in the morning mentioned deep learning. Deep learning which is employed in big data
analytics for data mining.
In Deep Learning, you try to recognise patterns, through these artificial neural networks – patterns of
recognition. Of course, this scares some people, whether these artificial machines will become so intelligent
that will take over humans. I don’t think that’s possible. That’s not because I agree more with people like Roger
Penrose. You know the Penrose tile, the man who, the tiling is named after him and it’s used widely in looking
at the structures of cosicost hose which I don’t believe. I have my own model for cosicost hose and Roger
Penrose quotes mathematical theorem by a guy called Kurt Gödel. Mathematics people may know about Kurt
Gödel. What he calls an incompleteness theorem. He postulated it in 1931, it has still not been disproved. He
says any branch of science starts with the setup HCM and we are happy with it provided we find nothing which
is inconsistent with that and Kurt Gödel’s theorem says you can never prove those HCMs unless you set up
HCMs outside that. He says and I quote, what Roger Penrose says, “Any machines that you create, cannot be
smarter than you.” Whether it’s a computer or cybernetic machines, and then, of course, there are theories, on
the varieties of intelligence. The things which require language processing or mathematics or logical reasoning –
a machine can learn but what about musical intelligence, what about bodily-kinaesthetic intelligence, what about
the interpersonal relationship based and so on.
And then, of course, we need I defined many years back a phrase called ‘coherent synergy’. See, we
talked about national labs and universities – there should be synergy among them. We have to talk on and
about academia and industry. You should be coherent among that and this is we must have synergy among
that – synergy. But coherence means that this synergy should take place at the right time and the right place. We
should also have space-time synchronization; synergy in every effort, coherence among all the efforts or you
can develop the right manpower at the wrong time or at the wrong place. Of course, a smart physics guy told me
once synergy also has coherence but the Physics answer to that is – this is local coherence. I am talking about
global coherence.
Well, let me come to the end of my talk, I can go on talking like this. I am very happy to learn that as early
as 2015, CHARUSAT received the CCI Technology Education Excellence Award for being the best university in
teaching-learning practices. This is extremely important. Teaching and learning, teaching - you may teach but the
guy may not learn you know, so this is very important. Alfred North Whitehead, the British philosopher, written
many long times back, “Age has experience; youth has imagination, and the job of the university is to transfer
knowledge without destroying creativity.” This is the principle of bases of a university, university education. And
now, with the excellent E – Connectivity available, there are reports coming up, electronic techniques in education,
technologies – all of them require e- connectivity.
I saw one young lady with a PhD related to cloud computing. You know what happens here, it happens
in every university. More than 2/3 of the awards are taken by ladies. CHARUSAT maybe even ¾. I am not sure. I
have to do the head counting. So, it comes to my mind. And you have established I think, this part of this cloud-
ready infrastructure. I think there is in your report. This acquires apart from cloud computing, mobile learning,
