2017 Passenger Growth
2017 was our third consecutive year of passenger growth. Passenger
numbers increased by 2% to a record high of 750,000. Traffic on the
UK’s nine services was strong: an extra 18,000 passengers travelled to
and from the UK – a 3% increase on 2016 numbers. Passenger numbers
using Flybe services to Birmingham and Edinburgh reached record
levels whilst Aer Lingus recorded the highest number of passengers
using their London Gatwick service since the route started in 2009.
August was the busiest month of the year for passenger traffic with
89,000 passengers passing through the airport.
Services to continental Europe continued to perform strongly with
over 100,000 passengers availing of flights to a range of European
destinations such as Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Lanzarote, Milan,
Tenerife and the Costa Dorada service with TUI Ireland.
The airport now has a well established network of over 20 international Passengers in 2017 Growth in UK traffic
destinations with the largest number of UK services available from
any airport in the West or North West of the country.
2017 Highlights
2017 saw the commencement of a new charter service to Lapland
with Sunway Holidays which operated in December.
May was also a historic month at the airport and a remarkable day for
the people of Knock and the Irish diaspora in New York as Fr. Richard
Gibbons, PP, Rector of Knock Shrine, led a group out from Ireland West
Airport to New York with Aer Lingus for a special and historically unique
6-day trip. The primary purpose of the visit was to have the remains
of John Curry, the youngest person to witness the Knock Apparition
of 1879, re-interred from the current location at Pine Lawn Cemetery,
Long Island to St. Patrick’s old Cathedral, New York.
