Resource 61 The Learning Process: Level 3
The next phase of the Learning Process covers the ability of the learner to apply the knowledge, ideas, concepts and potentially the concept frameworks that are now understood, and use them to meet the need or opportunity that has been identified. To be creative and come up with new solutions to problems, it is important that we let our minds wander and daydream so the brain can scan those cognitive resources and look for possible solutions that combine unique combinations of our cognitive resources. This phase may result in us developing innovative, possible new solutions to the challenge we are facing.
The objective of being innovative is that we can then possibly be ingenious by leveraging that innovative new thinking into becoming a product, system, environment or some form of media. Innovative solutions quite often must be reviewed and have changes made to them in order to line up the innovative thinking so that an actual product, system, environment or some form of media is a realistic possibility.
Bringing together innovation and ingenuity is an extremely dynamic process and may take a very short, through to a very long time, to achieve. Being ingenious requires a vast range of new knowledge, ideas, concepts and concept frameworks after we have spent time coming up with our innovation. This process can often result in totally new opportunities coming to the surface while working to solve an initial problem, need or opportunity.
The innovation and ingenuity processes have been outlined previously. At level 3 of the Learning Process, the two aspects of innovation and ingenuity are dealt with independently and then they automatically become integrated. Like every aspect of learning, the learner does not simply finish being innovative and then start being ingenious, but rather, the initial ideas and concepts that lie behind the innovative solution will change as the learner starts creating the product, system, environment or media to meet that identified need or opportunity.
