HITCHES

                               ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Hitches are knots that are used to secure a rope

to a post, hook, ring, rail or to another rope that

plays no part in the actual tying. A line or rope

is said to be 'made fast' rather than 'hitched',

because only the knot itself is called a hitch.

Some hitches work when the pull is at right

angles, such as when a rope is made fast to a

rail. Others will withstand a lengthways pull, as

with making fast to rigging, masts and cables .
