WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT
covered by Nirvana (unplugged)
Key Emaj Tempo 109 BPM in '6/8'
E A D G B E
Although originally recorded by Leadbelly in the 1940's, this song was revived by Nirvana
on their 'Unplugged in New York' show - aired on MTV in 1994 and featured on their
subsequent album release of the same name.
Unlike the other songs in this book, we'll be using a 6/8 time signature, as a regular 4/4 is
way too slow to follow. All this means is that each bar consists of 6 beats instead of
four. So if we ran the two time signatures in parallel it would look like the example
shown below. Record this as it's the beat we'll be using for this song.
percussion (kick, tom, snare)
6/8 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6
4/4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
Now we have our percussion we can move onto the bassline.
bassline
That is it for the loop. My aim here was to keep it simple like the original, although you
can add whatever you like! The chords and strumming pattern are shown below, with
the percussion tab as a guide.
Tips: In the Nirvana version, the song switches from the key of Emaj to Emin
throughout. For consistency I've stuck with the Emaj for the loop - but you can
substitute your Emaj chord for an Emin to change the whole 'mood' of the song.
