5. Guide for Students
To ensure that students observe the requirement of academic honesty, with each
assignment, students are required to submit a statement that they are aware of
these policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures.
An example of the statement, which should be a signed declaration, is provided
below:
I declare that the assignment here submitted is original except for source
material explicitly acknowledged, and that the same or related material has not
been previously submitted for another course. I also acknowledge that I am
aware of University policy and regulations on honesty in academic work, and of
the disciplinary guidelines and procedures applicable to breaches of such policy
and regulations, as contained in the website

6. The VeriGuide System
The University has developed a new plagiarism detection software called the
VeriGuide system. It is being used at the University for promoting and upholding
academic honesty and integrity. The system supports English, traditional and
simplified Chinese, and provides a user-friendly web interface for class
assignment management and submissions. It can handle documents in different
formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, HTML and plain text. Submitted
documents are compared among one another, and with other documents in the
central database, digital libraries, and the Internet. Output from the system is an
originality report highlighting suspected plagiarized contents with detailed
analytic and statistical data. All students MUST use the VeriGuide before
submitting their assignments. Procedures are as follows:
a. Each student must upload before the deadline a soft copy of the completed
assignment to the plagiarism detection engine VeriGuide, at the URL:
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/veriguide
b. The system will issue a receipt which also contains a declaration of honesty,
which is the same as that in
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/policy/academichonesty/p09.htm. The declaration
should be signed, and the receipt stapled to a hard copy of the assignment, which
should be handed to the instructor on or before the submission deadline.
c. Assignments without the receipt will not be graded by the instructor.
