LESSON 12
Introduce twin consonants and their coding, using the word “pills” on the board.
Saxon Phonics and Spelling 1
● Point to “pills” and ask:
“Did you notice when we read this word that we pronounced only
one of these l’s?”
● Allow time for children to observe.
“Whenever we have two of the same consonants next to each other, like the l’s in ‘pills,’ we call the consonants ‘twin consonants,’ and we pronounce the consonant only once.”
“Let’s cross out the second consonant to help us remember this.”
● Cross out the second l:
pills
● Select a child to read each word and use it in a sentence.
● Leave the words on the board for the remainder of the lesson. ● Offer more snaps to any child who said “snap” the first time.
● Write the following on the board:
The End
“Has anyone ever seen these words at the end of a book or a movie?”
various answers
● If children cannot read the words, say the words for them.
“You will see these two words at the end of a book we’ll read today.
They tell you that the story is over.”
“Sometimes we will read and spell words before we have talked about all of their sounds. We call these words ‘temporary sight words.’ ”
“Temporary means ‘just for a little while.’ We will have to remember them by sight because we cannot sound them out yet.”
➤ Note: “End” becomes decodable in Lesson 27. “The” becomes decodable in Lesson 31.
“We’ll learn more sight words throughout the year. Your reference booklet can help you with sight words too. Take out your reference booklet and turn to page 31.”
“All the sight words we’ll learn this year are on this list. This list begins on page 31 and ends on page 34. Whenever we learn a new sight word, we’ll check the box in front of that word. The sight words are also in the alphabetical list of words at the front of your book.”
“Turn to page 33 and check off the word ‘the.’ If you need help reading or spelling this word, you can look here in your booklet.”
