Saxon Phonics and Spelling 1
● Have children read the word to determine that the s is voiced. Then finish coding it:
inns
● Select a child to read the word and use it in a sentence.
Worksheet
● Seat children where they can write comfortably. “Get out your worksheet.”
“Using the rules we just practiced, code the words by #11, #12, and #13. Then blend the sounds and read each word quietly.”
● When children finish, have them draw a line from one of the words (pans) to its picture. Assist any children who need help.
“Put your finger by #14. Let’s spell ‘taps.’ What is the first sound in ‘taps’?” /t/
“Write the letter that says /t/ on the first line by #14.”
● Repeat with /a/, /p/, and /s/. Children should write a, p, and s on the remaining lines.
“What word did you spell?” taps ● Repeat with #15 (sat) and #16 (nips).
“Put your finger by #17, and draw me a picture of the word ‘circles.’ ”
● As children work, walk around the room to make sure they draw multiple circles (showing comprehension of the suffix -s).
● Try to call each child to your desk at some time during the day to read some or all of the words on the worksheet. If possible, have him/her read the words in the High Frequency Word Box on the homework side.
● Always check each child’s worksheet, and have him/her correct it before sending it home. Worksheets should not be graded.
Homework
➤ Reminder: The back of the worksheet may be completed in class (if time permits) or as homework. Any work that children do should be corrected before they take their papers home.
●
“Turn your paper over to the homework side.”
“Code the words by #1 through #3. Then draw a line from one of the words to its picture.”
“Look at #4 and #5. Name the pictures and spell the words on the lines beneath them.”
Discuss each picture to make sure children understand the word it represents: #4 (pots), #5 (tops).
