“Look at the picture on page 8. Those black marks are musical notes. We use notes to show music.”

Distribute some colored pencils to each child. Children should read the
story independently and then color the pictures.
“Keep your book handy, because I will ask you to read it for me.”
Lesson 12
● Point to the author byline.
“This says ‘written by Maryann Dobeck.’ Maryann Dobeck is the author of this book. What do you think an author does?” writes books
● Repeat with the illustrator byline.
● Distribute Decodable Reader 1 (Pop It, Toss It!).
“Open your book to the first page.”
● Make sure children turn to the correct page.
“Pictures help us understand a story. This boy is sitting on
something. What is it?” a hobby horse
“Right. Looking at the picture helps you understand what is
happening at this part of the story.” “Turn to page 6 and look at the picture.”
“Sometimes the pictures in a book have writing. This writing can also help us understand the story. Where is the writing in this picture?” on the children’s shirts

“What does the writing tell you?” the children’s names
● Have children turn to page 8, and review the temporary sight words
