Lesson 12
Decodable Reader: Print Awareness
“Today you’ll each get to read a book. Before I give you the book, let’s talk about some of the things you’ll see in it.”
● Write the following on the board:
A pin is in it.
“This is called a ‘sentence.’ A sentence is a group of words that tells or asks something. A sentence always begins with a capital letter.”
● Point to the capital A to demonstrate.
“A sentence also ends with a period, a question mark, or an
exclamation point.”
● Draw an example of a period, question mark, and exclamation point on the board to demonstrate.
● Point to the period in the sentence on the board. “What does this sentence end with?” period
“We use a period at the end of a sentence that tells something. Let’s read this sentence together.”
●
● Point to each word as you read the sentence with children. ● Hold up Decodable Reader 1, and point to the title.
“A book’s name is its title. What is the title of this book?”
Toss It!
Pop It,
“Right! Just like your names, we begin the important words in a title with capital letters.”
● Point to the comma in the title. “What is this mark?” comma
“Commas separate the ideas in sentences. When we read, we pause just a bit when we come to a comma.”
● Point to the exclamation point in the title.
“We talked about this mark a minute ago. Who knows what we call
this?” exclamation point
“We use exclamation points at the ends of sentences to show
excitement.”
“Let’s read the title together. We’ll pause at the comma and make our voices sound excited.”
➤ Note: The question mark will be taught in more depth in Lesson 17.
