The Jerusalem Great Synagogue—

A Halfway House?

WHEN THE JEWS began to build the Jerusalem Great Syna-
gogue in 1974, many prophecy watchers felt, "This is it!
Here comes the Tribulation Temple!"
Indeed, some teachers of prophecy still hold that the mag-
nificent new synagogue under construction in the Holy City
is sufficient fulfillment of the third-Temple prophecies; but
the synagogue instead represents a compromise plan, some-
thing at which the chosen people have always been good. The
synagogue is not the third Temple, but it is a wonderful
synagogue!
The Jerusalem Great Synagogue is the result of the frus-
tration apparent in the idea of rebuilding the true Temple of
God on its appropriate site. If the Temple in all its glory
cannot be had at this time, then at least the chosen people
may have a common place to worship, close to the Temple
site in Jerusalem and serving as a central meeting place of
worship for all Jews of the world.
Dr. Maurice Jaffe, president of the Union of Israel Syna-
gogues and chairman of the building committee for the
Jerusalem Great Synagogue, concedes, "We're not prepared
for it [the actual Temple of God] spiritually, politically or
