 President’s Councilors Dinner Honorees Announced
Rev. Robert McChesney, S.J. ’67 Bishop William Byrne ’82 Dr. Erik Maginnis
Georgetown Preparatory School announced the 2020 President’s Councilors Dinner award winners virtually on November 19. The 2020 President’s Councilors Dinner, which is held annually
at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland during the second week of October, was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
REV. ROBERT MCCHESNEY, S.J. ’67 and BISHOP WILLIAM BYRNE ’82 were announced as the 2020 Insignis Medal recipients and DR. ERIK MAGINNIS, Georgetown Prep’s Academic Dean, was named the recipient of the 2020 Joyce Award.
In his welcoming remarks, Georgetown Prep’s President, REV. JAMES R. VAN DYKE, S.J., noted, “The President’s Councilors Dinner is, indeed, a celebration. It is a celebration of our mission and identity—the essence of Georgetown Prep. It is the celebration of our exceptional young men and their journey to become men of competence, conscience, courage and compassion; men of faith and men for and with others. It is also a celebration of Georgetown Prep’s very best.”
The meaning of Insignis is outstanding or exceptional. This word is taken from the Latin text of the Spiritual
Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola, and his Meditation
on the Kingdom of Christ. Insignis is one who is outstanding or exceptional in service to other people, to the community and in this Meditation, to their eternal King. They overcome natural selfishness by offering service even greater than expected. St. Ignatius used the phrase; “Insignis in domino” – “Outstanding service to the Lord.”
Established in 1981, the Insignis Medal is Georgetown Prep’s highest honor. The awards name is taken from The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola. This year, Fr. Van Dyke awarded the School’s highest honor to Fr. McChesney and Bishop Byrne.
The John Edward Joyce Award is presented to a member of the faculty who exemplifies Georgetown Prep’s core values and ideals in recognition of a deep commitment to the School and its students. This year’s recipient is Dr. Maginnis.
The 2020 President’s Councilors Dinner award recipients will be honored at next year’s President’s Councilors Dinner in October 2021.
The President’s Councilors Dinner is held annually to honor leading donors to Georgetown Prep’s Annual Fund and current and past winners of the Insignis Medal.
