n mid-March 2020, Georgetown Prep was well into its planning process to move to a virtual campus environment for the foreseeable future due to the increasing threat of the novel
coronavirus pandemic. While our academic and technology teams were hard at work making sure the School’s curriculum and class schedule would not be disrupted, Eamon O’Liddy, Director of Strength and Conditioning, had a tall task: how to keep Prep’s students active and in good physical shape.
Coach O’Liddy created @gprep_fitness on Instagram to give Prep students a virtual outlet for their daily workouts. He created daily and weekly schedules along with intermittent virtual fitness challenges to keep the spirit of competitive lively. Using the app Teambuildr, students were able to record and track their progress as well as submit their results to Coach O’Liddy and their Prep coaches.
Prep hosted twenty virtual challenges between March and November. There were over 200 competitors across all competitive sets (including faculty and staff members), with the high-water mark of twenty students for “100 push-up for time” competition. The “GP Fitness” account gained popularity with our students and alumni alike. Many younger Prep alumni participated in the challenges and competitions.
Last spring, the Prep fitness community competed in the “Yards for Yeardley” competition. As a school community, Prep covered over 2,237 miles to raise awareness for the One Love Foundation, led by the class of 2022.
Along with the fitness routines, Prep coaches have been able to use the “Teambuildr” app to deliver team and sport-specific workouts each day.
Coach O’Liddy led a Strength and Conditioning class over the summer with 30 students joining him for one-hour workouts via Zoom.
