The French Huguenots
and Fort Caroline – The Beginnings of Conflict
The Huguenots were Protestant Christians who were mainly from the part of the
Reformation led by the reformer John Calvin that came out of Geneva Switzerland and
spread to France. They were persecuted off and on during the 1500’s in France
sometimes very severely. Many left for other countries. Those coming to England were
called “refugees” and this is the origin of where we get this word in English today. Fort
Caroline (next page) was supposed to be an opportunity for some of them to start over
with new lives and at the same time prove their value to the King of France.
