                                        France, Spain, and Fort Caroline
             The French Huguenots
             make the first attempt
          • In 1564 France tried to create a colony in the area at mouth of the Saint Johns river at
the southern edge of the disputed territory we now call Georgia.
          • It was named Fort Caroline.
          • It was to be a refuge for French Protestant Huguenots who were under persecution in
France as well as an attempt to gain a foothold in this area of the new world. The
Catholic King of France was willing to let his Huguenot subjects attempt this to
               “prove” their value to France.
          • But Spain also claimed this territory!
