Charles Wesley
But Charles is mainly becoming know for his prolific hymn writing. He is
credited with writing 8,989 hymns, for an average 10 poetic lines a day
for 50 years. He produced 56 volumes of hymns in 53 years, producing
in his lyrics what brother John called a "distinct and full account of
scriptural Christianity. "Though John is understood to be the organizer
of Methodism, it is said of Charles "The early Methodists were taught
and led as much through [Charles's] hymns as through sermons and
[John] Wesley's pamphlets.“ After declining health he died in 1788
leaving his wife Sarah and their three surviving children. Charles is still
remembered for his ministry while in St. Simon's Island, Georgia, by
the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church; in
1950, the conference opened a Christian retreat center on the island
by the banks of the Frederica River, designating it Epworth by the Sea
in honor of his and John's birthplace.
