The Man In Love
In verse 2, we are told that it takes humility (lowliness), gentleness and patience (longsuffering) on the part of both parties to do what they have been called to do. This insight draws attention to the fact that while the coming together and forming of a new identity happens instantaneously, the fusion that makes for a seamless operation as one entity will take some time, and the identified virtues or attributes would help both parties to stay committed to the end goal.
Furthermore, the unity of Spirit must be preserved and peaceful co-existence knowing that both parties are from the same source, being members of the body of Christ, and are working toward the same goal, based on the same standards as well as same empowerment to fulfill their roles. This point outlaws any form of dispute or discord in the labour to fuse the parties into one seamless identity and operational entity. According to Psalm 133:1-3, it is this unity of Spirit that makes God to command His intended blessings upon the union. Where there is disunity God will withhold His blessings from coming in.
In coming together as one flesh in Christ’s, the ultimate goal of the new union remains “till we all come to the unity of the
