all your soul, and with all your strength. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Deuteronomy 6:4-7
The emphasis was on loving God with all that they had. This love was to be expressed in obedience to the commands that He gave. The scripture pointed out that no effort must be spared to ensure that the people and their households pay special attention to the words that God commanded, which Adam failed to do in the case of Eve. God was committed to take His people into the ‘promise land’ out of His love for them and their fathers before them, but demanded reciprocity of the love gesture from the direct beneficiaries.
And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brethren, as He promised them; now therefore, return and go to your tents and to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold
