The Man In Love
imposes a debt on us from the day we make the commitment until we transit to the kingdom of God. Men will spend their entire lives paying up on that debt, from the day they get married. The good news however, is that payment of the debt needs not be onerous or burdensome. It is a debt that husbands can pay with ease, gladness and joy in a regular, ongoing basis (Matthew 24:13).
A Command For Believers Only!
And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
1 John 3:23
When Jesus outlined the new commandment, it was communicated to his disciples only. In the scripture above, we can see clearly that the commandment for husbands to love their wives was given to those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is not a commandment that applies to husbands who are not children of God.
The reason for this exclusive command to children of God, may be better appreciated from 1 John 4:7-8. The scripture makes
