TEARS OF SUFFERING
Apa and Ama with their memories fresh, couldn’t come
to terms with the reality they had lost a treasured son.
Although Samphel’s heart was heavy, a sense of pride ran
like a clear stream through a muddy stretch of land. He
was proud of his brother.
Au Lham shed tears to see the smoke rise. She reminisced
when Ugyen had smiled. When she recalled his voice that
resonated from the rooms and struck an emotional chord
in her heart, she hid her face in her hands and sniffled.
As the languid smoke rose, Tshoden’s tears dropped
relentlessly. Her husband sobbed too.
“Why do you cry, mom?” asked her three-year-old
beautiful daughter.
“Because they saved our country, cheychey,” said father,
pointing to the cadavers. “They are our heroes.”
“Heroes? Like the heroes in the movies?”
“More than that, sweetheart,” replied her father.
Cheychey blinked at the rising smoke, trying to figure out
what a hero meant. Tshoden took her in her arms and
kissed her.
“Cheychey, over there,” she whispered, pointing at the
blazing cadaver. “Can you see?”
Cheychey nodded.
