       cots which could be used in conjunction with crochet, needlepoint fillings, or
       linked to other tatted rings. There was an element of snob value in the craft,
       for Queen Marie of Romania was known to have written articles on the sub-
       ject (under the pseudonym of A Lady). It became the fashion to have tatted
       furnishings on the altars of private chapels. Curiously, tatting permitted the
       use of colour (generally blue, cream, silver, or gold) in the work while coloured
       crochet was considered `not quite the thing' amongst gentlewomen-the house-
       maid's best outfit in one tale includes a collar of green and yellow crochet lace
       of shamrocks and buttercups.
