I
                            We
                           You

                           They had better Verb 1
                            She
                            He
                             It
                       One‟s Name

Speaking Tip : We use “had better” to give strong advice, or to tell people what to do
                                       (including ourselves).

“Had better” may suggest a threat. It is not used in polite requests.
“Had better” refers to the immediate future. It‟s more urgent than „Should‟ or
                                      „Ought‟.

                                                  I

                                                 we

                                                 you
                          I think they Should…
                                                 she

                                                 he
                                            One‟s Name

Speaking Tip : Many people don't like getting advice if they haven't asked for it! To avoid
giving the wrong impression, you can try some of these expressions :

                                      "You could always…"
                                      "Have you considered…"
                                      "Perhaps we could…"
"Do you think it's a good idea to…"

Speaking Tip : When advising other people we should try to make it as open as possible.
Most people don‟t like to be preached by others, especially Australian.
