Sisters of Saint Joseph
St. Joseph’s Chapel Improvements
The Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph engaged Bernardon to lead significant design improvements
to the existing 5,400 square foot St. Joseph’s Chapel that would contribute to a more enriching environment
for prayer life and worship. The goal of these alterations was to improve the intimacy of the existing chapel,
improve accessibility for participants at mass, and
improve the thermal, visual, and acoustic comfort
throughout the worship space.
The interior of the existing chapel was built in the
Gothic tradition and provides a large worship space
with seating for over 400. The Latin cross plan
configuration includes a central aisle, two side aisles,
and a crossing with shallow transepts to either side.
The altar is elevated and located just north of the
crossing. The proposed reconfiguration of the altar
would serve to remove barriers to accessibility, and
the proposed position of the altar would create a
more intimate arrangement for the daily assembly
of 40 to 50, while remaining functional for larger
gatherings of up to 400.
