Thermal comfort in the chapel was originally provided by a radiant heat system in the cooler months; however,
comfort was difficult to achieve in the warmer months due to the absence of an air-conditioning system.
To that end, the scope of the improvements included the integration of an air conditioning system that is
sensitively integrated into the chapel. The design team weaved the new duct network in the attic framing
above the side aisles. These ducts feed linear diffusers that are located in the shadows of the existing frieze
located at the spring point of the main vault. The cool air drops gently to the seating areas below providing
quiet comfort to the congregation.
Lighting and acoustics were identified as characteristics of worship that were “getting in the way” of the
worship experience. The existing lighting of the chapel was noted as being especially weak in the side aisles,
and although LED lamps were installed in many of the existing light fixtures, a more thoughtful approach to
lighting throughout the chapel was explored. The design solution included the addition of a corona above the
new altar - a “crown” that reinforces the sense of communing and creates a more intimate lighting scenario
for smaller daily celebration of mass and prayer.
In order to overcome the challenges of the existing acoustic performance, the acoustic characteristics of the
existing chapel were assessed. The design solution included the proper placement of a powerful new speaker
system, and an infrared assisted listening device system was incorporated to provide equal access to those
facing hearing challenges.
Bernardon’s careful consideration of the existing design challenges, active participation in
the review of existing conditions, sensitive design solutions, and desire to exceed our client’s
expectations contributed greatly to the magnification of the splendor of this sacred place.
