Design Statement: Christ’s journey from Bethlehem to
the Mount of Olives is the basis for imagining the Sisters of
St. Joseph Spirituality Center. The building and landscape
become the figurative Mount of Olives surrounded by the
Garden of Gethsemane. The Spirituality Center erupts
from Bethlehem Pike as a stone wall – the Mount –
providing a buffer to the road activity and creating a quiet
and contemplative interior. Central to the concept is a
chapel representing the prayerful Jesus on the Mount.
The dorms are the reclining Apostles who surround Jesus
at the Mount following the Last Supper. The dorms remain
well connected physically and visually to the garden while
remaining focused on Jesus – the Chapel.
