Reflection: A Multimedia Project on Discrimination at Cal Poly
1. How did the Multimedia Project help you learn about Media and Technology?
The multimedia project helped me to learn about six specific technological mediums that are used to create new and old forms of media. I learned about website building, blogging, online game creation, comic creation, social media advertising, and in particular, video creation.
Website building really takes a good amount of time to figure out how to match fonts and colors, not only with each page on the website, but also across all social media platforms. This creates a “brand” for our project by familiarizing our audience with a specific style on all platforms. The website requires consistent updates to present fresh material to assure viewers that new content is available on all platforms, and compatible on all devices.
Blogging requires extensive time researching and interviewing events, and rely strongly on the voices that articles include in order to ensure credibility. Bloggers really must go out into the world, attending multiple events to create just one single story.
Online game creation requires deep thinking to create tricky questions and solutions for the games, as well as a big imagination and computational skills. Many versions of a game must come out before it has been perfected, as it must be played to seek out flaws in the program. Device compatibility is something that the game medium also must work with to create an effective program for all to use, and many issues can stem from having the wrong coding for a specific part of the game. It is a complicated medium, but is very effective in educating people, as we read about in the Scientific American article.
Comic creation requires a deep imagination, and in our case, a satirical approach to get across to our audience. Typically college students relate to meme-like comics, whom are our audience which we must cater to. Moreover, comics must have thought put into them and be respectful, even though they are a form of art, we must express our ideas in a manner that will not be harmful to others.
Social media advertising taught me the most about technology and media, as I did a significant amount of outreach to friends and other Cal Poly students. My intent in doing so was to receive submissions of microaggression stories and also gauge the public’s eye view towards the Mustang in The Room on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. I was able to gain 20 followers on the Instagram page through outreach on my personal social media stories. My
