friends instantly had a positive response to the project, and spread the word to their friends as well. The follower count and activity on the Instagram page began shooting up, as well as the likes and comments on the Facebook posts. Just by a few of us posting on our personal social media stories, we were able to gain support from many Cal Poly students that we did not particularly reach out to. By doing this outreach, I learned just how quickly social media can be used to gain popularity for an account, organization and/or business, and I plan to continue to use it for that exactly. It is bewildering to me just how much power social media has, and I am truly touched by how I was able to share important instances of injustices through this project via social media, and reach so many students. It has changed the way I view social media. I now view it as more of an effective, useful and fast tool to bring people together regarding common interests, rather than a superficial app used to make people feel better about themselves, as I have felt in the past about it.
Lastly, creating videos has taught me about technology and all that goes into the making of just one video. Acting, planning, shot lists, professional interviewing and video editing are all now tasks that I feel comfortable with, and will be skills I hope to pursue in my future. These different tasks all add up and take time to complete, and by doing each of them I understand how to execute them properly and in a timely manner.
2. How do you think the media project you created with your team worked within the Multi-Media Project as a whole?
Our team was central to the overall project, because videos provide a visual representation of what our project is trying to say through writing, static comics, games, etc. Videos are the most popular medium and are widely well received by the public. According to Chloe Mark regarding 2018 branding trends, “81% of Generation Z-ers report watching at least one hour of online videos a day." Therefore, the best way to reach the younger population is by creating educational, informative videos that will provide them with an understanding of the different people around them and the stories that they have.
3. If the medium is the message, then what was the relationship between your team project’s medium and the message it provided?
Our videos provided the message that the audience needed to see. We developed a message in our videos through intentional filming, planning and acting that is unachievable by any other medium. We put much thought into the planning as well as the conducting of the videos, so that the video alone would evoke emotion from viewers, without having to give any written or verbal explanation of the video’s meaning. With videos being new media, videos as our medium allowed for a large amount of feedback from the youth and drew the most impact on them in regards to our message: creating a culture of inclusivity, equity and diversity at Cal Poly.
