Identity and Specialty
Macau is repudiated in its apt combination of cultures – the
Chinese and Portuguese. After the handover to the PRC in 1999,
sinicization of Macau had become the dynamic of Macanese culture.
However, Portuguese culture had already indelibly embedded in
Macau which procced to influence the cultural specialty and identity
of Macau residents.
Demography
The combination of Demography compels the incurable sinicization
after Macau handover in 1999. According to Yu and Chan (2011), with
the fanaticism of immigration from the mainland China, 90% of the
population in Macau is China while Portuguese remains a small
portion in the population, which is around 3%. A further study by Yu
and Chan in 2014 reviews that 47.1% of the Macanese residents are
immigrants, which Guangdongese makes up the majority among the
population (~75%, see fig.1 for more details). Based on these statistics,
Macau offers “the picture of a Chinese-dominated city” (Jean, 1999).
