Guia Fortress (including Guia Chapel and Lighthouse)
The Guia Fortress was built between 1622-1838. It consists of Guia Chapel
and the Lighthouse. Although the Chapel is the building that belongs to
western religion, it is easy to see the combination of Chinese and the West
through the decoration. The frescoes inside the Chapel, for instance,
presents Western and Chinese themes which is about motifs of religious
and mythological inspiration. Some angels standing on the clouds and
these clouds look similar to the “祥雲”, which is an element of
traditional Chinese art. This presents the cultural exchange between China
and the West. On the other hand, the lighthouse introduces the cultural
and technological exchange between East and West in Macau. The
lighthouse was built in 1865, It is the first modern lighthouse on the
Chinese Coast. The whole Guia Fortress actually is the symbols of Macao’s
maritime, military and missionary past.
