Urban Transformation in
Macau
Macau economic structure have been changed along with the era.
In early part of 1950s, Macau traditional handicraft industry had
been mature, such as the incense, firecracker and matches. Since
1970s, Macau started to develop the manufacturing and textile in
light industry. The most industry development period should be
1980s, the manufacturing factory were increasing in this period.
There were 107 factories in 1957 and increased to 1240 in 1985
(Yuan and Yuan, 1988). In 1984, Macau GDP was around 7.8 billion,
there are 2.8 billion from the industry (Yuan and Yuan, 1988). To
compare with industry, the tourism and gambling contribution was
around 1.95 billion, which was 25% (Xu, Yao, Zhang, 2011). It means
the industry exceeded the gambling in 1980s.
But Macau have been relying on the gambling industry to support
the economic development since 90s, which become an
indispensable part. Tourism and Entertainment Company of Macau
Limited were monopoly since 1962. In the agreement, the part of
casino income is for charity, build up the high standard casino,
hotels, and assist in completing the transportation system (Chen
and Chen, 2001). Massive Betting duty provide the foundations to
the urban development.
