SAFETY FOCUS Continued
• Be sure to involve the team in discussions surrounding team effectiveness and allow the team to establish their
own action plans. It is important to gather the perspective of the people who are most involved so that subse-
quent decisions are made with complete information. A study which discusses the key characteristics of effective
and ineffective developmental interactions shows that interactions that allow someone to discover their own
needs and come up with workable solutions are more effective than those where a leader tells the team what
they need. Leaders should perform participative debriefs and give their team members the opportunity to re-
flect, discuss, and share their own perspectives before providing direction.
• Debriefs should not only be effective but must be efficient as well. Teams can easily get into the weeds and
spend valuable time discussing topics that can be taken offline or tabled for a later discussion. Spending too much
time covering topics that do not add value to safety can discourage future participation in debriefs.
The Safety Focus for December is Lessons Learned. During each week of the WORD we will look back at 2020
and discuss the good and not so good. Until then have a Safe and Productive Day!
Customer Compliment - RV3 and RV7 on Long Island RR
The morning of November 11th I, Marc Hackett received a text from Christopher Leathers from the Long Island
Rail Road asking to speak with me. I called him and he proceeded to explain that he was very pleased with the
work being done by the Loram employees on his property as well as the scheduling and oversight being done by
the Loram Assistant Manager, Jwaltney Daniels. The four named individuals were Justin Harty, Sheldon Lucas,
Willie White, and Mitchell Jones.
Mr. Leathers proceeded to mention that he was pleased with the partnership, as LIRR had a great production
season, Jwaltney was integral to their success as he scheduled around moving double shifts and last minute chang-
es. He closed the call by restating how appreciative he was of the entire Loram team on his property.
