The Curse

were, because I was scared to death myself.

I huddled closer to the boy sitting next to me and
noticed some of the other boys doing the same,

so I didn’t feel so badly.

Soon it was time to sleep. The full moon was now

high in the sky, looking like a large glowing

basketball. “Now, two people to a tent”,
Mr. Licorish instructed. Everyone paired up, but I

         was left without a partner.

A beautiful girl, with a heart-shaped face, long

thick hair and a smooth cocoa brown complexion,

who I hadn’t noticed before, came up to me and
asked if she could be my tent partner. I said sure

and she introduced herself as Jasmine

         Tnayuocuos, pronounced, Ta-nay-u-cus. I said,

“What an unusual surname you have, I’ve never

         heard it before.”

“It’s an African name”, she said, “it means one who

cannot rest”. I thought to myself that both the

name and meaning were weird, but said nothing.
