Jack the Donkey
The Government gave the Agriculture
Department instructions to catch all donkeys and
put them in the zoo.
Jack did not want to be put in the zoo because he
had always been free in High Hill. He did his best
to avoid all of the traps set for the donkeys in the
areas surrounding High Hill. When he heard the
men trying to catch donkeys, he made sure he
was properly hidden.
But, one day, he got greedy and couldn’t resist
the lovely heap of barley on top of a trap hidden
in the field where he was grazing. Of course, the
zookeepers quickly caught him. Jack cried loudly
and fought to get free, but it didn’t work. So off
to the zoo they went with Jack.
Jack was not happy at the zoo. He decided he
wanted to escape because the zookeeper did not
feed him well and he did not have any friends.
They had put Jack in a paddock with a high fence
round it, all by himself.
