Dada Culzac
I
was lucky to meet my Great Grandfather,
Matthew DaDa Culzac, who I got my name from.
He was born in 1913 and died in 2015. My mom
told me many stories about him. She said he was
very strict with his children, and grandchildren.
My Great Grandmother died very young, so DaDa
was alone for about 40 years before he died.
DaDa kept a cane and a super thick leather strap
in his bedroom. My mom and her cousins
believed that he soaked the strap in stale urine to
make it beat hotter. DaDa used the cane to chase
after his children and grandchildren when they
were naughty, but when they behaved really
badly, like cursing dirty words or disrespecting a
neighbour, DaDa would surely call them to his
room, close the door and give them a serious
flogging.
DaDa did not like children whistling or being bare
-back in the house. He would tell them that they
were “trying to play man”, and that he was “the
only man in the house”.
