WOMEN’S HOSPITALS
(Report by Dr. I. M. Docg, M.B.E.)
This year has been a busy one in the Women’s Medical Department but the expansion of
our work is of necessity limited until such time as we can move into the new hospital. At
present, not only is the number of beds entirely inadequate, but the buildings are deteriorating
rapidly.
During the year we were sorry to lose the services of Dr. Shannon, whose contract was
completed, and also of Dr. Muir-Leach, who had been doing school work and left on account
of ill-health. Efforts were made to get an Arabic speaking doctor to replace Dr. Muir-Leach,
but these have so far been unsuccessful.
We were sorry to lose also Sister Weymes, the Child Welfare and Health Visitor, who left
after her marriage. She had inaugurated the child welfare work in the villages with much
success. Her place has been refilled by Miss Hemmingway.
In the month of July we were pleased to welcome to work with us Dr. Lourie, a Polish
woman doctor, qualified in Edinburgh, and a highly qualified Woman Surgeon has also been
appointed.
It is hoped during the coming year to extend the work done in the villages.
The outstanding feature of the illnesses amongst women patients is the all too frequent
occurrence of gross anaemia. It is felt that this is largely nutritional, and is on such a scale
that it requires to be dealt with through Government channels.
The number of severe burns, often fatal, is ever on the increase and a large portion of these
is due to mishandling of primus stoves. If public demonstrations were made on the proper
way to light these stoves and the precautions to be taken, the incidence of burns might decrease.
