The standard of Hygiene and Sanitation in both town and country, remains at a low level
and no improvement can be brought about until the authorities concerned employ trained
sanitary staff and are prepared to enforce public health measures by legislation. The Health
Inspectors of this department carried out routine inspections (Table F) and succeeded in pre
venting a deterioration in existing conditions. The remarks made in last year’s report on this
subject still hold good for the most part.
Messrs. Disinfestation Limited (England) carried out a campaign for the destruction of the
rodent population in Manama and Muharraq in the early part of the year with very satisfactory
results. The Health Inspectors were trained in the work and are continuing routine control
measures. Unfortunately, rats arc remarkably fecund animals and are bound to re-assert
themselves unless other measures such as the proper stowage of foodstuffs and the rat-proofing
of buildings likely to attract them, can be introduced as well.
