          Government Loan. During the year 1956 the Government granted to the department a
      loan of Rs. 970,000/- for the settlement of Bapco s Loan and the loan of theSons ofShaiksSalman,
      The Ruler, and if this amount is added to the total of the previous loans given to us, it brings the
      total up to Rs. 2,000,000/-.
         Rents and Leases. The total collections under this heading amounted to Rs. 278,869/1/0
      as against Rs. 279,188/10/0 last year. The reason for the deficit was mainly due to some tenants
      who failed to pay their dues before the closing date of the year.
         Proceeds of the Properties Sold. The department sold during the year three houses, three
      pieces of date gardens and some common shares, altogether for Rs. 143,667/13/- as against
      Rs. 26,420/- last year.
         Debts recovered. The department recovered Rs. 47,013/15/0 from certain debts due to the
      estates under its administration as against Rs. 20,799/- last year.


                             NOTES ON EXPENDITURE
         Maintenance, etc. Disbursements under this heading amounted to Rs. 173,052/11/- as
      against Rs. 136,241/1/3 last year.
         Properties purchased. The department bought during the year three houses and a piece
      of land situated in Manama and Muharraq and also a date garden altogether for Rs. 117,232/4/-
      as against Rs. 89,283/- last year.
         Upkeep of Buildings and additions. The department built during the year four houses, and
      the fifth is under construction. This house was given to contractor Mr. Ramzi Tomania to
      build, for the heirs of Abdulla A1 Zaid, instead of their house which was sold to the Government,
     and in addition to these the department attended to many repairs in various buildings. The
      money spent under this heading amounted to Rs. 129,853/10/- as against Rs. 141,294/2/4 last
     year.
         Payments to Beneficiaries, etc. The total cash payment amounted to Rs. 1,594,885/-/10
     as against Rs. 426,892/6/1 last year. The above sum covers the amount of Rs. 1,111,590/- paid
     up in settlement of Bapco and the sons of Shaiks Salman’s loans. It covers also the interest
     paid on loans taken from the Government, establishment expenses, and the shares of majors
     who drew their dues.
         Loans Advanced. Rs. 4,577,130/- was paid out in loans against securities of immovable
     properties during the year and Rs. 3,628,739/- was outstanding in loans from 1955, thus making
     a total of Rs. 8,205,869/-. Out of these sums the department collected Rs. 4,089,419/-, the
     balance in the same heading at the closing year was Rs. 4,116,450/-
