              Rs. 21,500. Provision for special education, in England, of Shaikh Abdullah
        bin Shaikh Hamad al-Khalifah and fees, allowances, and expenses of Shaikh Khalifah
        bin Mohomod at the Police School at Nasik, in India.
              VII Municipalities. Rs. 50,400. Manamah and Muharraq municipalities
        each receive a monthly government grant of Rs. 2,000, an allowance of Rs. 200
        per month is paid to the Muharraq Municipality for work in the town of Hedd.
             VIII Public Works Department. See Schedule on page No. 46.
              IX  Establishment Rs. 1,300. This is the upkeep of Government gardens
        such as the palace garden and Budeya garden.
              For research work, including the cost of an agricultural expert from India
        Rs. 20,000 has been allocated.
              X  Transport. Rs. 28,400.
              The need for a Government motor launch has become more urgent since
        the increased development in the Hawar Islands. During the year considerable
        expense was incurred in hiring launches for police patrols. A serviceable launch
        fitted with a powerful 60 h.p. Kelvin engine is being built for the Government in
        the Bahrain boatyards.
              It is likely that two additional lorries and three Pick-ups for Public Works
        Department and police will be purchased during the year. Two motor cycles have
        been ordered from England for police work.
              XI  Unforseen. Rs. 20,000.
              XII Electric Department. Doan Rs. 60,000.
              The Electric Department is not at present in a position to purchase the
        Mirrlees diesel oil engine and alternator from its own funds and a loan of Rs. 60,000
        is being made by the Government to the department. This matter is referred to
        fully in the electric department’s annual report.
              XIII Reserve.
              Out of the expected revenue Rs. 12,00,000 is to be placed in the Reserve
        Fund and in addition not less than Rs. 2,00,000 from the surplus existing at the end
        of 1356. If the revenue exceeds the expectations of the Budget the contribution to
        the Reserve Fund will be increased.

                                       EXPENDITURE.

                            Notes on Public Works Schedule 1357.
              A. New Works—Major.

              1. Palace. Rs. 1,30,000. No definite decision has been made regarding
        building a new Palace though the possibility has been under consideration for some
         time.
               2 & 3. Hospital. Rs. 1,25,000. The hospital will consist of two separate
         blocks of buildings one being the outpatients building and dispensary above which
         is the Medical Ollicer’a flat and the other consisting of the wards, operating theatre,
         stall quarters, kitchen stores, etc., etc. Tho outpatients building and the Medical
         Officer’s Hat is on land reclaimed from the sea, the cost of this building, which is in
         course of construction, has been estimated at Rs. 45,000. The plans of the main
         hospital are not yet complete but a rough estimate has been made of the cost which
         amounts to Rs. 80,000.
               4. Extension of Customs Pier. Rs. 50,000. It is proposed to extend the
         Customs pier up to a point where the depth of the sea at low tide is 11 feet. This
         will enable large boats and launches to come alongside the pier at all states of the tide.
