VII. Government Engineering and Carpentry School. The training
of local boys in engineering and carpentry continued during 1357, and during the
year, four boys completed their carpentry course, and were given work in Govern
                   ment Departments.
The Muharraq section (one instructor and six students) has been amalgamated
with the Manamah section, and an extension will bo built in the school to accomodate
them. A temporary matting annexe has been added to house the extra boys, until
                   the new extension is built.
The engineering section is now doing useful work in carrying out new and
repair work for other Government Departments.
During their two years course, the boys serve three months in the Govern
ment motor-repair shop, and the same period in the Government Power House,
whereby they gain useful general engineering knowledge.
The last six months of their course will be spent (if the boys develop satisfac
torily) in the Engineering workshop of the Bahrain Petroluem Company.

The following subjects are taught at present :—
                              Mechanics and practical bench work
                              Welding
                              Blacksmithing
                              Elementry Science and Applied Mechanics
                              English
A technical library has been started, and text books and books of reference
are supplied to the students in English and Arabic.

                                                 General.
Private Ice Plants. Two Arab merchants, Haji Khalil Ehrahim Kauoo
and Messrs. A. M. Yateem Brothers, applied for permission to build ice plants
for public supply purposes. Only one of these, however, Messrs. A. M. Yateem
Brothers ordered a plant, which is of 5 tons capacity, and has a storage chamber for
                   ten tons of ice.

The electricity to operate this plant is being obtained from the Electricity
Department mains, and the plant is expected to be ready for operation about the
middle of May, 1939 (Rabi Thani, 1358).
Water Supply. Two water towers were erected during 1357, each equipped
with two centrifugal pumpB (motor driven). Capacity of each pump 3000 gallons
                   per hour.
One tower supplies the Fort quarters, Bungalow, married lines, swimming
pool, gardens etc., and the other will provide the water supply for the new Govern
ment Hospital and Dispensary at Naim.
Royalty and Tanker Oil-Gauging. The whole of the oil produced by the
Bahrain Petroleum Company’s field was gauged and sampled by this Department for
the year 1357, amounting to 1,112,620 tons.
Gauging and sampling was also carried out, at the Zellaq terminal, on oil
shipped from Arabia by the California Arabian Standard Oil Company. Royalty is
                   deducted on oil so shipped.
Various grades of oil were also gauged, sampled and tested for the Bahrain
Petroleum Company, twenty-three ships in all, being certified during the year.
Financial Position. A profit of Rs. 12,198/6/6 was made for the year 1357
after meeting all demands, including overhead charges and depreciation.

                                                                                                *
