                     this as a matter of course. But it is necessary to study his
                     career closely to realize the full height of the spirit of self-
                     sacrifice which he more than once showed. His patriot­
  ;                  ism, too, was of a deep and abiding character. Next to
                     his religious faith it was the strongest of his characteristics,

                     colouring all his actions, and ever influencing his thoughts
                     in times of crisis. A strong, essentially “ straight ” man
                     he passes almost without question into the glorious com­
                     pany of Empire builders in the pages of history.
