(/) Education. Towards the end of the year courses were begun to improve the
standard of literacy and recruits were being given instruction for about an hour
each day. Figures arc not now available for the percentage of literates and
semi-literates at the end of 1956 but we believe that about 10 per cent, of the
Force were literate in some degree.
