Prisons
19. State Prisons were maintained throughout the year at the Fort and Jida Island. The
Fort Prison was used for short term prisoners and Jida Island for long term prisoners. The
Prisons population was as follows :

20. The analysis of prison sentences in respect of prisoners admitted to Prisons during the
year is as follows :

21. The general health of prisoners throughout the year was considered to be satisfactory.
A total of 21 prisoners were admitted to hospital for treatment. A total of 1,026 visits were
made by prisoners to the Medical Officer on his daily visits to the Police Clinic, but of this
number only 25 resulted in prisoners being excused daily routine duties, the remainder were
treated for minor complaints and given medicine and the duty. There were no deaths of
prisoners during the year.

22. In December, 1956, a temporary Detention Camp was established at Rumeitha for
persons arrested in connection with the November Disturbances, and detained under Adminis­
trative Orders issued by the Government. The number of persons detained when the Camp
was opened was 51 and this number was reduced to 45 at the end of the year.

23. There were no Prison Industries carried out during the year. Prisoners detained at
the Fort were employed in the daily maintenance of sanitation and cleanliness of the police
compounds, internal economy duties and gardening, while the few prisoners at Jida were
employed on internal economy duties and gardening.
