345. Notwithstanding, however, tho interests of those people wcro so
closely bound up in tho maintenance of peace and tranquillity during the
pearl season and that porhaps fairer prospects of its permanonoy were now
opened than have existed for many years past, yet tho Resident fully expcctod
that occasional acts of aggrossion would occur by tho injured party not
abstaining from retaliation, and appealing to us for satisfaction and redress,
these isolated cases might bo settlod without much difficulty by a prompt
iuterferenoo on our part. Should tho season fortunatoly pass over with a
moderate dogreo of quietness, it has to bo hoped that the members of tho truoo
might be so far satisfied of its advantages as to come to a permanent settle­
ment of their dilforenoes, or at all events bo induced to seok our mediation
with a view to tho cessation of hostilities during each recurring pearl season.
Translation of the terms of a truce for six months agreed upon by the Chiefs
qf the Arabian Coast in the presence of Captain Henncll, the Acting
Resident in the Persian Gulf dated Bassadore, the 21st May 1835.
Wo whose seals are hereunto attaobed, viz., Sultau-bin-Suggur, Sheikh of tho Joasmi
Tribe, Slmckboot, tho father and plenipotentiary of Sheikh Khalifu, Chief of tho Banias, Obed
bin Said, tho Chief of tho Boo Fclasa Tribe and Dobai, and Robhid bin Hamid, the Sheikh of
Ejraau, being fully impressed withasonso of tho evils suffered by our subjects and dependents
in consoquonco of their being dobarrod from cariying on tho pearl fishery on tho banks during
tho presont 6tato of hostilities among oursolves, and duly appreciating tho general advantages
that would bo derived from the establishment of a truce during tho fishing season, do hereby
agroo to aud bind ourselves down to observe the following conditions
That from the 22nd Moburrum A. H. 1251 (or 2l6t May 1835) there shall bo a cessation
of hostilities at soa between our respective subjects and dependents, and that from the above
dato until tho 29th Rujub A. H. 1251 (21st Novembor 1835) an inviolable truce shall
bo established, during which period our several claims upon each other shall rest in abeyance.
2nd—That in tho event of any one of our subjects or dependents committing an act of
aggression by sea upon thoso of the partios to this engagement, we will immediately afford
full redress upon tho same being brought to our notice.
3rd—That in the event of an act of aggression being committed at sea upon any one of
our subjects, or dependents, who are parties to the truce, we will not proceed to immediately
retaliate, but will inform the Resident at Bushire, or the Commodore at Bassadore, who will
forthwith, take the necessary steps for obtaining reparatiou for the injury inflicted, upon its
being satisfactorily proved.
4th—That on the 80th Jumadil-ool Akhir 1251, by the blessing of Providence, we will
endeavour to arrange either an extension of this truce, or by a firm and lasting peaoe, but in
the event of our not being able to come to a satisfactory arrangement regarding our respec­
tive olaims among oursolves, we hereby bind ourselves to give notice on or about tho above
date to the Resident of Bushire of our intention to renew hostilities after the expiration of the
term now fixed upon for this truce, viz., the 29th Rujub 1251.
