by the outbreak of the Mutiny. He was wounded several times and
awarded the V.C. After that his career progressed slowly with
promotions to Major in 1864 and to Colonel in 1875. He was
promoted Major-General on leaving Aden, awarded the C.B. in
1889 and retired as a full General in 1894. He died in January 1905.

HOGG, Brigadier-General Adam George Forbes
Born 1836, the son of a Colonel in the Indian Army. After educa
tion at Leamington and Wimbledon, he joined the Bombay Army
in 1854 and was decorated for gallantry in the Persian campaign of
1857. He took part in the fighting in the Indian Mutiny and the
China War of 1860. He was in the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-8
and the Afghan War of 1879-80. He became Quarter-Master
General of the Bombay Army until his appointment to Aden. His
period of office was marked by a great increase in Treaties of
Protection which were extended to the Quaitis, Fadhlis, Wahidis and
Mahris. Subsequently he was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1893
and died in June 1908.

JOPP, Colonel John
He was bom in Bombay in 1840, the son of a Major in the Bombay
Engineers. Commissioned in 1856, he was in action in the capture
of Sheikh Othman fort in 1858. He took part in the Abyssinian
Expedition of 1867-8 and the Afghan War of 1879-80 when he was
with Roberts’ march to Kandahar. He served as Deputy Quarter-
Master General of the Bombay Army until his appointment to
Aden. He was awarded a C.B. while in Aden and became an
A.D.C. to Queen Victoria on his retirement. He died in June 1923.

CUNINGHAM, Brigadier-General Charles Alexander
Bom in 1842, he was the son of the Secretary of the Northern
Lighthouse Board. After education at Edinburgh Academy, he
joined the Indian Army in 1858. Apart from service in the Afghan
War of 1879"-80 he held mostly appointments on the staff. In 1892
he became Secretary to the Government of Bombay Military,
Marine and Ecclesiastical Departments. He retired after leaving
Aden with the rank of Major-General and died in 1925.

CREAGH, Brigadier-General (Garrett) O’Moore, V.C.
Bom 1848, son of a Naval Officer and descendant of the O’Neill
lords of Ulster, he was educated at the R.N. School, New Cross,
and Sandhurst. In 1866 he joined the Sherwood Foresters,
