Garrison Engineer in Bombay and Poona. He commanded engin
eering troops in the Mutiny, before becoming Chief Engineer in
Scind. In 1866 he was Chief Engineer of Bombay Presidency but
shortly afterwards was promoted Major-General in command of
the troops in Aden. His period as Resident saw an increase in
dealing directly with minor tribes instead of using the Sultan of
Lahej as an intermediary. He retired as a Lieutenant-General in
1874 and died in 1898.

SCHNEIDER, Brigadier-General John William
He was born in 1824 and educated at Christ’s Hospital and
Addiscombe. He joined the Bombay Army in 1841 and was in
action in the Mahratta War of 1844-5 and in the Mutiny. He
conducted language examinations for the Army. He took part in
the Abyssinian War of 1867-8, commanding a Brigade at Magdala.
He returned to become Judge Advocate General of the Bombay
Army from 1868 until his appointment to Aden. The early part of
his Residency was dominated by the crisis posed by the presence of
Turkish troops in Lahej. He left Aden to command a Division of the
Bombay Army and was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1881. He
was knighted in 1889 and died in January 1903.

LOCH, Brigadier-General Francis Adam Ellis

He was born in 1827, the son of a Naval officer, and lived in
H.M.S. Victory which his father commanded. After education at
Edinburgh High School and Rochester School, he joined the Indian
Lancers in 1844. He achieved distinction in the Punjab campaigns
of 1848-9 being present at the siege of Mooltan. He fought in the
Indian Mutiny and in the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-8. He was
then appointed to command the Scind Horse and as acting Political
l! Superintendent on the Upper Scind Frontier. He became Comman
'' dant of the Scind Frontier Force and then acting Commandant of
the Haiderabad Contingent. He then returned to the Scind Frontier
in political charge at Jacobabad, and obviously this background led
to his appointment to Aden at a time of frontier troubles. The main
event of his residency was, however, the purchase of Sheikh
Othman. He retired in 1884, was promoted General in 1889 and
died in July 1891.

He was born in India in 1828, the son of an officer in the Bengal
