Further reforms, 1924-1927 213

years I have been here on the eoore of economy, but If I may venture to
a Ay ao.it io solely duo to tha faot that I happen to know arabid &
Persian & can consequently disposo of oaaa work fairly quiokly a sdaqpa
diapanao with an Interprotar which mado it poaaibla for mo to carry on
without an Assistant. Statiatica show that caaa work is steadily in

creasing .Parhupu this la unfortunata but it at louot shows that tha
court is fulfilling a want,& in Court foon alono tha expense of an
Assistant in aaoily oovorod .As you know,Indians aro not at all pop
ular liara & tharo woro msny raaoona wliy it was considered doairablo
that tho Aosiotant should bo an British Offloar.axma^grtibaOudbcgicg

That Bahrain ia gradually becoming more civilised may or may
not , aui t ua.but I fail to aoa how wo con stop it .Every yoar woro

people from hare go to Europe in tho poarl trade & como baok somewhat
enlighteneda number of educated people now come horo froquently
froram India.lt is not poanibla therefore that ideas should remain fix-
id. It was precisely beoause Shaik Easa refused to movo alittle with
tha times,v/hila his subjects were advancing, that souuut gavo rise to
nooasaity for a more enlightened Ruler.
I think the Government of India may root assured that no
body wnats to intriduce any more 1 reforms * or to commit them in any
wvy further.Iraprovomonts in the Administration will howovr* gradually

tako place unless we take it upon uurselvea to forbid Hamad to carry
out hie Ideaa.lt aeoms to me that onoe the *Re,cord of righto* iu irwmjne
                                     are
compiMdd & the diving books brought into woe Sc tho simple rules are
jot out for the Court the fR4fiormi* may be allowed to die a natural
death Sc that we should not drag in evory small improvement in the
idministrati9n of the state Sc label it as a Reform*.
