Reasons Ifos. 1 & 2 also account for the decrease in receipts
from pearling licenses, since owing to lack of money many
craft ere unable to go pearling this season.

Customs improvements. Two noteworthy improvements have
been effected in 1349, (l) the erection of the Customs
li^it, consisting of two 500 watt lamps, one shining out to
sea, as required, and tr.e other to illuminate the Pier
when night cargo-work is in progress. In this connection
the Harine superintendent of the 3.1.5.K.Coy. Ltd., writes
n_ • • it is considered that the lighting of Bahrain as it
stands has been a decide! benefit to shipping " (2)
the efaction of a hand-worked crane up on the Customs Pier,
capable of taking s five-ton lift, which in time will prove
of real assistance in ’the landing of cargo.
ill the Customs premises ore now lit with electric light,
which adds to efficiency to working at night.
Local craft. There are registered in 3ehrain at present,
1279 sailing craft, end 60 motor launches; also 28 motor
boats have been built and sold to ot-.er marts. It is very
pleasing'to note the steadiness of t;:e boat-building indus
try; and the concession of a refund of Customs duty upon
an imported motor when it is built into a locally built
craft appears to be justified by the above results.
